The world’s first NFT museum has launched this month in Seattle, founded by two tech executives,Jennifer Wong and Peter Hamilton.
The Seattle NFT Museum (SNFTM) opened on January 14th, and includes the merging of physical and digital artwork that will encourage visitors to discover new ways of interacting with the work.
SNFTM is the first of its kind, and has programming and exhibitions solely related to NFTs. According to Hamilton and Wong, the museum will manage the line between the virtual and the physical through a number of features including QR codes, and specialized frames acquired in partnership with Samsung that will enable curators and artists to present their digital works in a number of ways.
Hamilton noted in an interview:
“We’ve been following this burgeoning community of NFT artists, curators, collectors, and it’s just exploding. The community has this incredible energy and influence that they wield, but there’s something that’s missing, and that’s the physical experience and physical interaction that comes from looking at art together.”
Wong added:
“We chose to open a museum versus a gallery because we do care about the community aspect of it,” Wong said, “We want it to be educational for those who only know the acronym NFT to the deep level enthusiasts. “
While the museum is choosing to focus on Seattle-based artists SNFTM has also announced that NFT collector Aaron Bird is to lend the museum works from his collection, including NFTs from the CryptoPunks series, generative art by Tyler Hobbs, the Chromie Squiggle series by Erick Calderon.
There is currently one permanent display on view in the form of an educational exhibition that explains the basics of NFT technology, however all other installations will be temporary in order to give new artists exposure in this space.
